CORE DATA

Table S2A. NTL-LTER Data Available Electronically.

i. Datasets available online in the data catalog of the NTL website; ii. Other data available in electronic format.  NTL has established the following definitions for categorizing the datasets that are managed in the information system:

Core parameter / Core data

Core data are collected, processed, and archived by NTL-LTER PIs, students, and/or staff using established protocols.  In some cases, a core dataset may be derived from data acquired from an outside source (e.g., The U.S. Census Bureau). The designation of "core parameter" implies that the NTL-LTER program is committed to ongoing collection.  Core parameters are essential to the perception of long-term change in the NTL-LTER study areas.

Associated data

Associated data are collected and archived by NTL-LTER PIs, students, and/or staff for a limited duration.  In some cases, an associated dataset may be derived from data acquired from an outside source.  Associated data sets are project-based and there is no formal commitment to collect the data beyond the life of the short-term project.

Reference data

Reference data are not collected by NTL-LTER, but are archived by NTL-LTER.  Reference data are typically derived from datasets collected for other purposes. Reference data assist with placing core and associated data in an appropriate context.  There may or may not be a formal commitment to update, derive, and archive reference data sets over time.
